Games Almanac Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Games Almanac ("the App," "we," "us," or "our") is operated by Daniel Bernardi, located in Vancouver, Washington. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your information when you use our mobile application.

By using Games Almanac, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information You Provide

Account Information When you create an account using a third-party authentication provider (Apple or Google), we receive:

  • Email address
  • Display name or username (if provided by the authentication provider)
  • Unique account identifier

User Preferences

  • Platform preferences (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, PC)
  • Genre and theme preferences
  • Notification settings and preferences

Favorites

  • Games you add to your favorites list
  • Timestamps of when games were favorited

2.2 Information Collected Automatically

Device Information

  • Device type and model
  • Operating system version
  • App version
  • Unique device identifiers (for push notifications)

Analytics We use PostHog, a privacy-focused analytics platform, to understand how users interact with the App. This includes:

  • Screen views and navigation patterns
  • Feature usage (e.g., search queries, filter selections)
  • Session duration and engagement metrics
  • Scroll depth on key screens
  • Approximate location based on IP address (country/region level only)

We may use session replay features to observe anonymous user interactions. Session replay tools are configured to mask or exclude sensitive input fields (such as passwords and authentication fields). We do not intentionally collect sensitive personal information through session recordings. You can opt out of analytics tracking in the App's Privacy settings.

Crash Reports and Performance Data We use Sentry to collect crash reports and performance metrics. These may include device state, app state, and error information at the time of a crash.

Push Notification Tokens If you enable push notifications, we collect device tokens necessary to deliver notifications about game releases and updates.

2.3 Pseudonymous Data

Some information we collect, such as usage analytics and crash reports, is associated with a device identifier rather than directly identifying you. This pseudonymous data helps us improve the App without knowing who you are.

2.4 Local Storage

If you use the App without an account, your favorites are stored locally on your device. This data is not transmitted to our servers and remains entirely on your device unless you create an account and choose to sync.

2.5 Information We Do Not Collect

  • Precise location data (GPS)
  • Contacts or address book
  • Photos, camera, or microphone data
  • Financial information (payments are processed entirely by Apple or Google)
  • Browsing history outside the App

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide Core Features: Display game release information, manage your favorites list, and sync data across your devices
  • Send Notifications: Deliver push notifications about upcoming game releases for games you've favorited (if enabled)
  • Personalize Your Experience: Show relevant games based on your platform and genre preferences
  • Improve the App: Analyze usage patterns, understand feature adoption, and develop new features
  • Fix Issues: Identify bugs, crashes, and performance problems
  • Provide Support: Respond to your inquiries and resolve issues
  • Maintain Security: Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or unauthorized access

No Advertising We do not display ads in the App and do not use your personal information for targeted advertising.

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We may share information only in the following circumstances:

4.1 Service Providers

We use third-party services that process data on our behalf:

  • Supabase: Database hosting and user authentication
  • Apple Push Notification Service / Firebase Cloud Messaging: Push notification delivery
  • PostHog: Product analytics and session recordings
  • Sentry: Crash reporting and error tracking
  • Cloudflare: API hosting and security

We enter into data processing agreements with our service providers where required by law. These providers may only use your information to provide services to us and must protect it in accordance with this Privacy Policy and applicable law.

4.2 Legal Requirements

We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or government request, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.

4.3 Business Transfers

If Games Almanac is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change.

5. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. Specifically:

  • Account Data: Retained until you delete your account
  • Favorites and Preferences: Retained until you delete your account or remove individual items
  • Analytics Data: Retained for up to 12 months in aggregate form
  • Session Recordings: Retained for up to 30 days
  • Crash Reports: Retained for up to 90 days
  • Push Notification Tokens: Retained until you disable notifications or delete your account

When you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except where retention is required for legal, security, or compliance purposes.

6. Your Rights and Choices

6.1 Access and Export

You can view your favorites and preferences within the App. To request a complete export of your data, contact us at support@gamesalmanac.com.

6.2 Correction

You can update your notification preferences and platform preferences within the App settings.

6.3 Deletion

You can delete your account at any time through the App settings (Account > Delete Account). We will delete or anonymize your personal information, except where retention is required for legal, security, or compliance purposes.

6.4 Analytics Opt-Out

You can opt out of anonymous usage analytics through the App's Privacy settings. When opted out:

  • We will not track screen views or feature usage
  • Session recordings will be disabled
  • Your engagement metrics will not be collected

Your opt-out preference is stored on your device. Note: Basic crash reporting may still occur to ensure App stability.

6.5 Push Notifications

You can enable or disable push notifications at any time through:

  • The App's notification settings
  • Your device's system settings

6.6 Account-Free Usage

You may use the App without creating an account. Without an account, your favorites are stored locally on your device and are not transmitted to our servers.

7. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including:

  • Encryption of data in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
  • Secure authentication through established providers (Apple, Google)
  • Row-level security policies in our database
  • Regular security reviews

However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your information.

Data Breach Notification In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify affected users and applicable authorities as required by law.

8. Children's Privacy

Games Almanac is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.

9. Automated Decision-Making

We do not use automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects concerning you.

10. Third-Party Services

10.1 Game Data

Game information displayed in the App (titles, descriptions, images, release dates, ratings) is sourced from IGDB (https://www.igdb.com). Your use of this data is also subject to IGDB's terms. We do not share your personal information with IGDB.

10.2 Authentication Providers

When you sign in with Apple or Google, those services may collect information according to their own privacy policies:

  • Google: https://policies.google.com/privacy

10.3 Analytics Provider

We use PostHog for product analytics. PostHog processes data in accordance with their privacy policy: https://posthog.com/privacy. You can opt out of analytics tracking in the App's Privacy settings.

10.4 App Stores

Downloads and optional tips are processed by Apple or Google. We do not receive or store your payment information. Please refer to their privacy policies for information about payment processing.

11. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where our servers and service providers are located. By using the App, you consent to this transfer. Where required, we rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards approved by relevant authorities for international data transfers.

12. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

Categories of Personal Information Collected

In the past 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information:

  • Identifiers: Email address, device identifiers, account identifiers
  • Internet or Electronic Network Activity: App usage analytics, screen views, feature interactions
  • Inferences: Platform and genre preferences based on your selections

Your Rights

  • Right to Know: You can request information about the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you.
  • Right to Delete: You can request deletion of your personal information.
  • Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing: We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
  • Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.

Do Not Track / Global Privacy Control We do not currently respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals. However, we honor legally recognized universal opt-out mechanisms where applicable, and you can opt out of analytics through the App's Privacy settings.

13. European Privacy Rights (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Data Controller

For purposes of GDPR, Daniel Bernardi is the data controller of personal information collected through the App.

  • Access, correct, or delete your personal data
  • Object to or restrict processing
  • Data portability
  • Withdraw consent at any time
  • Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority

14. Governing Law

This Privacy Policy and any disputes arising under it will be governed by the laws of the State of Washington, United States, except where otherwise required by applicable law.

15. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by:

  • Posting the updated policy in the App
  • Updating the "Effective Date" at the top of this policy
  • Sending a push notification for significant changes (if you have notifications enabled)

We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically for updates.
